HIKING
Liptov is surrounded by some of the highest and most beautiful mountains in Slovakia. The High Tatras, Western Tatras and Choč Mountains are located to the north, the Low Tatras to the south, the Great Fatra to the west, and the Poprad Basin to the east.
There are approximately 50 marked hiking trails in the region, with a total length of around 1,185 km.
Ďumbier and Chopok from Lúčky
ĎUMBIER
At 2,043 metres above sea level, Ďumbier is the highest peak of the Low Tatras. However, the ascent to the summit is not among the most demanding hikes. The trail is steady and offers spectacular panoramic views on both sides of the Low Tatras.
From the summit, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Liptov, Spiš, Horehronie, the Western and High Tatras, and the Slovak Ore Mountains, all seemingly right at your fingertips.
Prosiecka and kvačianska valley educational trail
Prosiecka and Kvačianska Valleys are among the most visited destinations for summer hiking in Liptov. Thanks to their easy terrain, they are especially popular with families with children.
In addition to the Oblazy water mills, a waterfall and wooden lookout towers, the hiking route also features an educational trail.
It is an easy half-day hike through two beautiful valleys in the Choč Mountains. The hike starts and ends in the village of Prosiek, located north of the Liptovská Mara reservoir.
Baranec from Žiarska dolina
BARANEC
Baranec (2,184 m above sea level) is a prominent mountain rising above Liptovský Mikuláš. Together with Kriváň, it forms a dominant part of the town’s panorama and is undoubtedly one of the most visited peaks in the Western Tatras and throughout Liptov.
One of the reasons for its popularity is the fact that the route to Baranec can be completed as a circular hike, with a stop at the Žiarska Chalet along the way.
Veľký Choč
VEĽKÝ CHOČ
Veľký Choč (1,611 m n. m.) is a unique mountain which, thanks to its location and elevation, offers exceptional panoramic views. From the summit, you can enjoy breathtaking views in all directions. It also provides an unusual perspective of the Western Tatras, while the entire Liptov region stretches out below you.
The hike to Veľký Choč is also interesting because there are several possible starting points. Hiking routes lead to the summit from Valaská Dubová, Lúčky, Jasenová and Vyšný Kubín.
Sivý vrch from Bobrovecká dolina
SIVÝ VRCH
Sivý vrch (1,805 m above sea level) is part of the Western Tatras and can be reached from both the Huty and Bobrovec areas. The hike to the summit is not among the most demanding, but it is certainly one of the most beautiful.
The spectacular views of Liptov and Orava are especially worth the climb.
A walk to the symbolic cemetery with the Ostredok lookout tower and on to the Demänovská Cave.
With an easy walk from Biela Púť along the yellow hiking trail, past the Ostredok hotel and the Ostredok lookout tower, offering an amazing view of the ridge and Demänovská Valley, you will reach the Symbolic Cemetery of the Victims of the Low Tatras, Demänovská Cave and back along the same route.
Babky and Červenec from Boborovec
The destination is the summit of Babky (1,566 m above sea level), which, although it is not among the highest peaks, offers beautiful views thanks to its location away from the main ridge. You can enjoy views of the Liptov Basin, the Low Tatras, the Choč Mountains, and eastwards into the Parichvost Valley. The slopes of Babky are covered with grass and sparse forest, making them ideal for skiing.
Siná a Bôry from Demänovská valley
Siná and Bôry are undoubtedly a natural gem of the Demänovská Valley. This hike is quite long and follows the yellow trail from the Demänovská Cave of Freedom to Siná (1,560) and Bôry (1,888), to the summit of Poľana (1,890), which is located on the main ridge of the Low Tatras. From there, the route continues through Tri Vody to Jasná, from where you can continue along the yellow trail back to the Demänovská Cave of Freedom or shorten this section by taking a regular bus.
